(finally got signed back in after computer repair got me signed out of everything, and hoping to get back to doing more w/ DW, figured talking about Dungeons and Dragons was as good a start as anything)

My BOY. My plan was to retire him at some point to roll up a new character, but I love him so much. I mean, I'm going to retire him because I want him to have a happy ending, but I'm going to hold onto him a little longer than I could do.

Backstory-wise, Jack's from a very working class background, in the capitol city of one of the three nations sharing a continent. When war broke out between the three, he was working as a courier, and went from delivering messages from one end of the city to the other and to neighboring villages on occasion, to traveling to and from various encampments and nearby fronts. He was then hired by an information broker as a spy, based on his ability to get in and out of dangerous places unnoticed, his attention to detail, and his memory. He pretty much immediately fell in love with his employer's son-- after a lifetime of working hard to shape himself to everyone else's expectations and desires, for the first time he found himself with someone who really only wanted to see the real him, and who gave him the space to figure out just who that was. In return, he looked at someone who had always been deemed the disappointment and saw his strengths-- and found a few of his weaknesses oddly endearing (but then, he's always had a hard time saying no to someone who needed him).

The two eloped, only for his new husband to be kidnapped from their campsite, leaving Jack in the position of being on the hook for his disappearance (along with the disappearance of all of his personal wealth, and his horse, when that was also taken). While Jack was away from their home city searching for his husband, the entire capitol vanished off the face of the continent, leaving a gaping crater, and bringing the war to an awkward standstill.

With the continent no longer at war, traveling it is a little safer, but not so safe that he could make it from one end to the other alone, and with no home city (and an employer who would have been out for his blood if he had), Jack found himself unemployed, homeless, his family vanished from this plane of existence, his husband missing... and so his best plan of action has been to take up odd work as an adventurer, using those jobs to travel and ask after any signs of his missing husband.

Current story wise, Jack is traveling with a cleric with a military background who also comes from the capitol and understands what losing your city is like, an impulsive and sometimes-clumsy tiefling swordmage with dreams of honorable knighthood, and a Mysterious Stranger (previously, he and the cleric had been traveling with a wizard, putting the cleric of all people in the position of being best able to absorb damage). The small jobs the party has been going on, clearing out bandits and getting information and taking messages for some wizards, is all sort of coming together to paint a much bigger picture about strange and ancient magic-- but also puts Jack in the position of dealing with a lot of zombies, which is his least favorite thing.

At present, his fellow party members know that he's looking for his employer's son-- not that he's searching for his husband. Having faced the thing he's most afraid of with these guys, though, and as they may begin to question why he's on a quest that puts him in danger and causes him great personal expense when there is no one waiting for him to come back triumphant, he's likely going to open up a bit more soon.

He's a pretty sociable rogue. His personal happy place is in a library-- his mental stats are fairly average at present, but he enjoys new information and he feels safe/comfortable there in large part because of he hours he spent in his employer's private library, using 'helping reorganize all these books' as something of a pretext for his courtship, and just hanging around his beloved there, both before and after the romance.

comments

Started a new fic for an old fandom...

The Same Three Chords is going to be the slowest slow burn I have ever attempted.
Word count for the year: 115,709
Bringing my daily average to: 2,104, which is not too shabby.

I had a good bit else going on this week, but mostly it was on the weekend so it didn't really affect me, and it's nice to know that I can take that time off to read and draw and spend a big weekend off doing Things, and like... still be on track. I had a very pleasant con experience! I won things, based on both luck and merit, I brought home little things for my sisters, I made a crafty thing, and I found a birthday present for my mom, which was less expected. She's got until April to forget that I'd sent her pictures of it, but it's a flamingo print apron, and she loves fun aprons and also flamingos. I managed to get out of the weekend having only bought myself three enamel pins... and it was difficult because there were so many, and so many of them were related to other areas of interest. But also, my pins were the number one thing people talked to me about (I got to enthuse about Buckaroo Banzai of all things!). So now I can re-curate my bag for the next con (plus I won a little set of those cute dollar-spot-at-Target-clearanced-after-Valentine's ones so also that'll be nice next February, as I like doing seasonal changes...)

Anyway, below the cut is the bits of writing!

comments

We might add in a fourth to the regular board game afternoon/evenings, but this week it was just three of us. The game on the docket was Boss Monster, which I had a blast with, but our third wasn't feeling it, so instead of playing another round, he checked out the games that the game place had available to demo, but none of those were speaking to him so we cut the afternoon short.

It's kind of a bummer in that like... two of us will basically play EVERYTHING and be pretty into it, and our third is really into the social aspect of getting together every week, but like, he's got much narrower tastes in terms of games? So like, he does get value out of it, and he's a good sport about trying new things even if they aren't his usual thing, at least trying one new thing a week that's outside the tabletop gaming comfort zone. Like, that is very cool of him to do just to hang out with us board game fiends! But it just narrows the field in terms of wanting to make sure everyone is having fun.

But the good news is, like... we do all enjoy CAH, and at least two of the three of us have a copy, so we can start just making sure to bring that as a backup, and that way if we're halfway through a session and it's just not working out, and there's nothing free on the shelf that we can agree on-- because you never know which games are going to be taken by another group, there are SO many tables at the game store for groups of people to use...

Also good news- even though they do sell some snacks and drinks, it seems like gaming groups are allowed to bring in their own food, when it comes to the kinds of things they don't sell, like, I've seen some D&D groups bring in pizzas. I don't know if our D&D group really wants to have everyone throw in for pizza ever, because our time slot doesn't really argue with any mealtimes, but, like... I really love to bake, and I used to just never really do it, because I live with people who need or want to limit various things and who have very different food needs, and like... there are only four of us in the house, none of whom really want to eat like... a quarter of a cake, or a quarter of a batch of something-- not very often. But if I can bake for the D&D group, my family can sample whatever I make without feeling responsible for finishing everything, and like... gaming dudes appreciate free food, this has always been my experience. I used to bake for my college group, like... one guy might make pizza and someone else would bring drinks and I'd make cookies... so it'll really be nice to like... maybe bake up a bunch of cookies every other Saturday evening, and let the icing set overnight if I ice them, and pack 'em up for Sunday afternoon.

Not this next week, because we're in the process of konmari-ing the place and it's a LONG process when everyone has chronic fatigue, so the kitchen's currently a bit all over the place. We're able to do crock pot meals and simple casseroles, but there's just no room for doing the sugar cookies I want to make until we can finish the job. But I'm excited! I'm going to teach myself to do royal icing this year!

comments
